3.5
3.5 stars, down graded from 4 when I first read it.
I think the thing that changed for me was how AS writes women. Even though he wants them to be strong, badass characters, he writes them as impulsive, vain, and trivial. I also have much less of a tolerance for discussion of rape and assault. I get that women are viewed as less than in this world, but I can only read so many female slurs before it’s just too much. The odd sexualization of young Ciri feels more glaringly obvious this time. I’m really glad CDPR adapted the story as they did for the game— feels more robust and thought out, and less shock value. Probably going to take a break from my reread of this series knowing the Rats story is more prominently coming up.
