'They had always been two mirrored souls, the only ones who understood the other in a city that wanted to consume them whole, and now they were joined, mightier when together.
"Even death cannot part us," she echoed fiercely.'
I loved loved loved that book! I loved it so much that I couldn't bring myself to finish the last 100 pages for three days, in fear of it ending, and it took me two additional days to write the review! 🥰
Following These Violent Delights, Our Violent Ends concludes the story of Roma and Juliette, and the fate of Shanghai. Like the first book, it was a marvel to travel into 1920s Shanghai and discover its complex political landscape, and the story of star-crossed lovers was as fascinating as ever.
The madness took a step back in this book, which I understand with the many plotlines and characters arcs that needed to be concluded, and I was more than surprised to cry for Tyler's death (and obviously the ending). The main flaw of the book would be, in my opinion, that we can sense that Chloe Gong's writing is still evolving, but the story, plot, world, characters, romance were so rich that I can hardly hold it against her. It was a wonderful read and I am looking forward to seeing how she will evolve as a writer in the future! 😊
Talking of the ending... That was my main question throughout my reading of the entire duology: how will it end? The tragic fate we are all familiar with, or a twist of Fortune that would surprise us?
I will not answer because I don't think there is one straight answer... But like Alisa, I choose hope. 🥰
