At first I thought this was a book based on the Fritzl story about a family in the basement. It may have been inspired by but it was certainly something different. Lots of family dynamics, anecdotes, and imagination told by a 10 year old narrator. There were certainly lots of dark parts and a few twists to the story, but mostly I found it fascinating. What I've just realised is I don't think any of the characters were named, aside from positions in the family or gender...
