Further To Fall by Catherine Cowles

5.0

Every now and then a new author will come on the romance scene and absolutely blow me away with their debut novel.  Further to Fall was one of those books.  This book was so well done, so well thought, and just an absolute joy to read.  It had a nice slow burn, lots of healthy drama, and a mystery that kept me glued to my seat.

Further to Fall is about Austin, an MMA fighter with a dream, and a grudge that has him denying himself real love for a long time.  Carter is a fresh faced elementary school teacher from Georgia, who comes to LA to teach inner city students.  Best friends with musician Liam, Carter meets Austin one night when she meets up with Liam.  And as far as first impressions go, this was certainly not a meet cute.  I was hooked into this book from page one.  I enjoyed all the characters, and loved getting to know their back stories, and a little bit about them.  I also loved how the reader progressed through the relationship between Austin and Carter.  A lot of romances today have a romance that takes off from some capacity right at the beginning.  The build up is there, but the attraction is so prominent that it's simply just a matter of time before everything goes up in a big ball of fire.  Further to Fall was different.  The romance was always there, but it was a low simmer, and the anticipation of what was going to happen was the thing that kept me flipping the pages on my Kindle.  The second half of the book was a thrill ride in and of itself, simply for the fact that it was wrought with tension from an outside source, and brought an element into the story that I was never suspecting.

Further to Fall has introduced Catherine Cowles to the writer spotlight and she is definitely one to keep an eye on.  I'm already anxiously awaiting her next book, and can't wait to get my hands on it.  Don't hesitate to pick up this debut novel, and give this new author a chance!
