Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. Andrews
5.0
While I read two mythological fantasies this month, this was by far the better of the two. I love reading about Greek mythology, and while the author admits to taking some liberties with the legends of some of these Gods and Goddesses, it was well done and crucial to this wonderfully written take on Daphne's story. As Andrews puts it, the women in Greek mythology are often not portrayed in the glory roles unless they are Divine. In this book, Daphne is a strong, courageous woman who takes on the task of saving Olympus, knowing it may kill her, which makes her the perfect character to root for.
Daphne grew up as an adopted child living in Sparta, but being an outcast alongside her brothers. While proving herself to be a fierce fighter and as strong as any man, Daphne doesn't have much faith in her Spartan-warrior dreams coming true. When a chance encounter with Artemis leaves her brother transformed, Daphne must help rescue the Muses and return them to Olympus, before all the Gods lose their power, and the world as she knows it crumbles. Finding herself paired up with God Apollo, Daphne strives to resist his charm and survive the evil forces that are at work.
If you're a fan of Greek mythology, even if you're someone who knows a lot about Greek mythology and may see where the author took the story into her own hands, you will love this book. It was so well written, the character development was slow but perfect, and there is suspense and mystery throughout the story, making you anxious to find out more. We see Daphne grow from an outsider in her home to a fierce woman who is sure of her talents and place in the world. There are aspects of Daphne's past that are a mystery, and the book ends setting up for a second. I can't wait to continue this story!
