The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner
3.0
I really liked Dill’s friendship with Travis and Lydia. I think the author did a great job of describing a teenage life where Dill and Travis’s parents were not present/abusive. The juxtaposition against Lydia’s privileged life was really good.
Travis having an online girlfriend and being nerdy with this staff, and staying hopeful and kind, only to be killed in a random act of violence was so, so sad. I gasped when I read that chapter.
I really liked that Lydia’s parents were willing to be so helpful to Dill and Travis without TRULY overstepping or being too much of a savior. And I love that Dill’s mom finally leaves his dad at the end.
