Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas
4.0
“Every step. Every curve into darkness. Every moment of despair and rage and pain. It had led him to precisely where he needed to be. Where he wanted to be.”
This series means so much to me more than I ever thought it would. I wonder what it is about Sarah’s books that melts my heart. May be it’s the complex world building or maybe it’s the intricately woven story or maybe it’s the array of strong, vulnerable and adorable characters or maybe it’s the relationship between them. There is just something honest and susceptible about her books that tugs my heartstrings and “Tower of Dawn” is definitely one of them.
“Tower of Dawn” follows the journey of Chaol Westfall and his companion Nesryn Faliq to the southern continents. As we know at the end of “Queen of Shadows” Chaol suffers from a spinal injury leaving him partially paralysed. Chaol’s only hope of recovery is the healers of Torre Cesme in the southern continents and it is for that purpose as well for convincing the Khagan royals of their cause and help them in the upcoming war against Erawan that the two of them travels to this far away land.
“Get. Up.” Her mouth tightened. “You want to die in this war so badly, then get up.”
The book parallels with the events of “Empire of Storms” and has an extremely compelling and exciting plot. It is needless to say, that I loved the writing and all the mysterious elements of the book along with the new characters and one character who is re-introduced yes! I am talking about this remarkable and brave woman called Yerene Towers from the “Assassin’s Blade”. It’s an important book in the series and there are some really interesting and totally unexpected revelations which changes everything. Also! Ruks, large eagle birds on which you can fly, you just had me on that itself.
Chaol’s Journey is nothing but inspirational. It wrecked me and left me teary-eyed. I have always loved Chaol, how could anybody not but after reading this book, I just adore him, this guy really deserves every happiness. His life has just turned upside down; everything that he believes in has come shattering down, everyone he has tried to protect have only been hurt and his physical injury is the last straw. It is understandably so that he is bitter but this book is much more about emotional recovery than a physical one. It is about healing one’s soul and accepting yourself with all your vulnerabilities and that just sometimes we cannot save everyone. Chaol realises the same in a hard way and I am so happy that he doesn’t just recovers completely but he learns to turn his weakness into his strength and that strength of will is what matters most. However, all of it he couldn’t have done without Yerene. For as much as it is Chaol’s journey, it is that of Yerene’s as well. Yerene’s character is such a breath of fresh air. She is brave, resilient, humble and dauntless. I loved her and I absolutely loved Chaol and Yerene together. A totally unexpected SHIP but an amazing one.
“Using the chair is not a punishment. It is not a prison,' he said softly. 'It never was. And I am as much of a man in that chair, or with that cane, as I am standing on my feet."
Then there is Nesryn, her character took an amazing turn, she was mostly a side character in “Queen of Shadows” but in this one, her character growth is outstanding. I loved her dedication to her cause, I loved that she becomes her own person and I loved the fact that she went on the adventure of her dreams and met her prince charming. Sartaq on the other hand, I guess he is alright. I loved Hasar though, even if she is manipulative, calculating and devious, she brought an interesting flare to the story. And obviously I loved Borte because she is such a fun character and deserves the world.
Overall, “Tower of Dawn” even though slow moving and less action-packed is a unique book in itself. There are some really strong and inspirational moments in the book and I enjoyed it enormously. For me this book is more about self-discovery and self-acceptance than anything else and I will treasure it forever.
Compelling, Gripping and Riveting!
