The Broken Earth Trilogy: The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin
5.0
The fate of the world rests on the confrontation between mother and daughter. Even though I knew either one or the other (or neither) would survive (the cost of using magic guaranteed that), the reunion was still heart-breaking to see unfold over the pages. The end is...not happy, but...hopeful. There is hope, something that all the characters in this world deserve. I admit, I felt a bit lost after reading Obelisk Gate but Stone Sky explains everything pretty clearly from the get-go.
I'm going to flip a table if this book isn't a contender for a Hugo.
While this isn't my favorite work of Jemisin's (I will always have a soft spot for The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, the first work I've read of hers) this is definitely her best work yet.
