Games We Play by Dana Isaly
5.0
4.9 stars.
Goddamn. The hype for this book was not playin’.
This was absolute, pure, smut, heaven for me.
The whole book takes place over one night. Hence, the series title.
It’s single POV, straight from Jack’s dirty, dirty mind and right into yours.
Quinlan shows up at Jack’s house to interview him for an article after signing a few NDAs, knowing the bare minimum of who he is what he does.
She knows he’s a gamer. She knows he’s popular. She knows he keeps his identity on a tight leash.
She did Not know that he likes to keep other things on a leash.
This book started out fantastically. The tension, the chemistry, the playful banter between them. It’s all so sexy and written so well. It led into the heavier stuff perfectly. It also ended fantastically. I didn’t have one single thing bad to say about this book.
The sex is hot as all hell. It’s a kinky good time. There’s not a long, detailed consent discussion so it’s not exactly how things should go down in the real world.(limits are definitely a must) But there was enough of an emphasis on her using her safe word, taking care of her, and not overdoing it when she wasn’t in the right headspace, that I didn’t miss it. Something I deeply appreciate.
All the kinks are used relatively lightly, but are definitely impactful and notable. Though I don’t think I can name them all, these are the biggest ones I noticed just as I saw them. (Take this list with a grain of salt. I am not experienced enough to know if I put it all in the correct category. Lol.)
First off. Im sure it probably has a name I don’t know but I’ll just lay it out. Jack keeps his mask on for a good portion of the book. Making it so that she doesn’t know exactly what he looks like, effectively keeping him the mysterious, sexy stranger for the first few rounds of orgasms.
Then there’s some light pet play. Some light bondage and sensory deprivation. Some degradation. Some praise.
There’s some very light switching. Some light funishment. It even has the tiniest hint of primal play.
*swoon*
HOT. It was dirty, filthy, hot smut of the best kind.
And the night they spend together really leaves you feeling like they were made for each other.
I, of course, wanted more when I finished because I’m a greedy smut slut. But it didn’t leave you feeling like things were unfinished or rushed.
It really did feel like the beginning of a relationship to me.
They had about 5 dates on their first night. I’m jealous as fuck honestly.
And. Don’t let the short time span and all the smut and banter fool you. This book also made me fucking cry. It was brief, and the mood picked up right after so it didn’t sink down into the depressing depths too far, but. There is talk of a past suicide attempt. And it’s described in detail.
Who, when, how, and why.
So definitely think about that before trying to read this if you are at all sensitive to the subject.
Remember that reading is supposed to be fun, and if it’s going to set your mental health back, it’s not fun and it’s definitely not worth it.
Check the trigger warnings. There’s some other things that might pose a problem, I just wanted to mention the big one.
This book kicked absolute ass. And it was only like 90 pages long.
I am so excited to see what each new guy in Jack’s crew brings to the table.
I know Wes is next, and I’m assuming all the other guys’ll get their own book too.
Knife play was mentioned for one, and fire for another so I’m 100% in before they’re even announced.
Gimme!
