Presented as an investigative account into what happened in the 5 weeks when FantasticLand staff stayed behind after a hurricane devastated the park. Members of staff (mostly college-age) had to surrender their electronic devices before starting their shifts to help preserve the authenticity of the park - a place where “fun is guaranteed”.
I listened to audio (which I highly recommend) and got so immersed in the story, I sometimes forgot it was a work of fiction. I felt the way it was set up worked really well and helped the story flow easier. The narrators really brought the characters to life and made you feel heartbroken for them and what they had to go through.
This novel is marketed as Lord of the Flies meets Battle Royale and it really does sum it up. I do think civilisation would break down faster than we'd like to admit; especially when cut off from the outside world.
