The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enríquez

4.0

* Adding a note here that in the story Kids Who Come Back there is an outdated term used to refer to trans background characters that is used frequently in this particular story. *

A strong collection of short stories, but as with most short story collections there were definitely some that were better than others. I particularly liked Meat , Where Are You, Dear Heart?, Kids Who Come Back, and Back When We Talked to the Dead. These stories are what made me excited to see what Enríquez does next.

I read the translated to English version so it may read different in Spanish, but I particularly loved the writing style of this author. It has a no nonsense and straight-forward style that I enjoyed immensely. It goes straight for the throat with an incredible fearlessness. There is no lyrical, flowery, overly ornamented prose here which I think suits horror so well.

I am rating this collection fairly high here. I didn't love every story but MAN.... did all these have such incredible boldness.
