Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

4.0

I finally gave into the hype with this one and I am so glad I did, I wish I’d read it sooner!

Daisy Jones & The Six tells the fictional tale of how a rock group came to be. How they flourished within the industry and seemed to achieve all their dreams. How their dreams didn’t turn out as they’d hoped when the band crumbles around them and has to split.

My absolute favourite thing about this book was the way it was written. I have never read a book written in this style before. This is absolutely not going to be for everyone. But the interview/transcript style had me picturing both the characters talking to the camera, and the scenes they were talking about it. It was incredibly clever and very well executed. I love a good documentary, and this felt exactly like a documentary in my head. I loved the musical creativity that came out. I have heard that there are some connections to Stevie Nicks so I will be doing some more digging!

I often rave about strong female characters in books. This book gave me exactly what I love when it comes to them! I adored Daisy, she was destructive and vulnerable but she also stood up for herself and knew what she wanted and deserved. I loved Camilla and her resolve, empathy and strength to push for what she wants without expecting perfection. I loved Karen and her ability to go against what is expected of a woman because it’s not what she wants from her life. I love that each of these women went a different way with their lives, and they didn’t need to conform to what is ‘normal’ to be happy.

I really enjoyed this and can’t wait to read more books by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I would recommend this to any music fans who fancy an unusually written book! I had so much fun buddy reading this with a friend, it was great to be able to discuss the characters and the writing style!
