Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley
4.0
Type of read: Commuter Read.
What made me pick it up: I think I first saw this on the Reese's Book Club List but it popped up on a few others and I love the coverart. I think think that this was another one of the books on the Reese's YA Book Club List that proves their selections for the YA list are much more intriguing and varied than those they choose for the "adult" list.
Overall rating: 'Firekeeper's Daughter' kept me on my toes. I am so incredibly happy I read this book. I'll be honest, I thought I had read the description but clearly, I did not because I absolutely was not expecting the full storyline. Daunis was a fully thought-out, fully realized character and Boulley did a beautiful job bringing her to life. She was real and I loved her but there were also times when you were like "Dangit Daunis! Why are you being so dumb?!" That's what I want in a main character, someone relatable yet aggravating. I also really appreciated how Boulley worked in the cultural aspects of the book and shared their culture and world with us. I would 100% recommend 'Firekeeper's Daughter' and I feel like it was the perfect book to get me out of my reading funk.
Reader's Note: 'Firekeeper's Daughter' includes themes of sex, drugs, racism, and individual and family trauma. There is a rape scene included about 3/4 of the way through the book. It's not super descriptive of the act itself, but what is happening is very clear. It is then also brought up on multiple occasions throughout the remainder of the book. I enjoyed 'Firekeeper's Daughter' as an audiobook and I have an absolute pet peeve when the audio is not consistent. Unfortunately, the version of the book was not great for this. There were multiple times throughout the book that you could tell the recording was done at different times, had different tones, or just different sound quality all together. Additionally, I was in a bit of a reading rut when I started 'Firekeeper's Daughter' I had a lot of loans out at my local library and unfortunately my loan lapsed before I was able to finish the book. My extended reading time is a reflection of that. Honestly, the book was just getting good when it ended up auto returning and I had to wait for my name to come up on the holds list again.
