Starting over is never easy, but choosing to walk away from everything because there is no other choice has to be one of the scariest feelings, and we see Ethan do this at the start of this book. He knew staying with his abusive - and influential - boyfriend would only mean more pain in his future, and he wouldn't just be allowed to just leave. So when he left alone at a cabin in the woods to heal after the latest round of abuse and a raging bush fire sweeps through the area Ethan realises being presumed dead would give him a chance to start fresh, and he walks out of the flames as Aubrey. Aubrey is afraid to get too close to others incase his past identity and who he ran from discovers he is still alive, that is until he meets Patrick, the lighthouse keeper in on a remote island who has suffered his own tragedy that keeps him from forming relationships and the story goes from there.
Both MCs are dealing with past trauma, but the way it is written is real and honest whilst being done respectfully, Patrick is a fantastic character and oozes comfort and understanding. The slow burn between these two works perfectly given the story and really builds that connection between them, the references to the ocean and stars and how they tie together were beautiful and poignant within the story, the spice/chemistry between them when we get to it was great and overall I think this is a really well written romance about finding your place in the world and healing along the way.
The audiobook was available to me in the Audible Plus catalogue, with Joel Leslie narrating. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. The reason this doesn't get a full five star from me is because infelt more could have been shown/done with the resolution of the situation with Aubrey's ex, given it was such a driving force behind the story and Aubreys character i would have liked a bit more to that ending than we got. 🌶🌶
