I love books about sisters and I love books with dual timelines and narrators. This book has all three plus a family drama, fantastic characters, and a feisty octogenarian who shows the younger women around her how one can live for themselves.
For more than 200 years the second daughters born to members of the Fontella family have been cursed- they will never find lasting love and will never be married. Some, like 29 year old Emilia, think the fact they’ve never had a lasting relationship is purely a coincidence while others, like 21 year old Lucy, do everything they can to break the curse, to no avail. Both cousins are surprised when their great aunt Poppy asks them to accompany her on a trip to Italy so she can meet her true love on the steps of the Ravello Cathedral on her 80th birthday. Emilia says yes for the adventure and Lucy says yes because Poppy promises this will break the family curse once and for all. The three second born daughters set out to find love and end up finding themselves along the way.
This was such an amazing book! I love how it has a little bit of everything in it- romance, family drama, mystery, and historical fiction. The characters are wonderful, the Italian backdrop is breaking, and the love story is one for the ages.
This was a book club pick and I’m so glad I read it! I can’t wait to discuss this with everyone at our next meeting.
