Never Less Than a Lady by Mary Jo Putney

3.0

Like the prior book in this series, I liked this well enough--enough to stay up too late reading, twice. I loved Julia's resilience in the face of horrific trauma. I liked Randall being a man of chivalry (while the text gently called out how fucking problematic that was.) I loved the side characters, particularly Louisa.

I did feel that Julia had a weird moment of "think about trauma, process, decide to Be Better, ok we're fine now." I understand that a lot of time had passed between the initial trauma and that point, but it doesn't seem like she did any processing in that time, and so it felt weirdly like flipping a switch instead of actually processing. And the villain was a little too mustache-twirling bonkers for my taste. But it was a nice quick read. I think that if I hadn't bought the series as a set, I wouldn't pursue further books in it, but since I have them I may as well read them.
