Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson

4.0

Nalo Hopkinson's impressive first novel presents a vision of dystopian Toronto, and a heroine, Ti-Jeanne, that learns she has a special, complicated destiny. It's a really neat example of Afro-Caribbean magical realism, with a dramatic story and interesting characters. I wasn't totally satisfied by the integration of the storyline about the politician looking for an organ donation into the main plot; it felt like it dropped off in favour of a lot of development of the main characters, some of which was a bit repetitive. I also found the book a bit over-descriptive on the gore for me, but if you're a horror fan it's effective. Overall I really enjoyed Hopkinson's dialogue and integration of quotes from folktales and songs and appreciated the opportunity to read this!
