Husband Material by Alexis Hall
5.0
The start of this review isn’t going to make that much sense with the 5* rating, but please hear me out…
I finished this book last night and honestly I had very mixed feelings about the ending. Whilst I’d kinda figured out that marriage wasn’t really the option that Luc and Oliver necessarily needed or wanted at that point in their lives (far before I reached the last couple of chapters), I was still kind of hoping they’d make it work. Throughout both books the mcs have struggled with the fact that Luc is very proud of his community and loves to celebrate them, whilst Oliver struggles to feel represented by what he deems as over commercialised rainbow flags. Whilst on the surface is doesn’t seem like a huge problem given that they’re very different in other ways, but it brings to light deeper issues about self acceptance and upbringings etc. throughout Husband Material Luc and Oliver hash out these concerns about themselves and each other, each time seeming to reach a satisfying and sensible solution. It’s for that reason that I didn’t entirely love the fact that was still the main reason they didn’t go through with the wedding at the end. I also didn’t love how they almost broke up because Oliver decided he absolutely wasn’t going to go through with it at the 11th hour. I also felt that the running out into the rain at the end felt almost like a tired cliche, but at the same time the mental image made my heart really happy? Hence the feeling very conflicted about the ending.
All that being said, I couldn’t bring myself to give this book less than a 5 star rating because, well honestly, I love Luc and Oliver and the supporting characters more than I can really put into words. The writing style continued to be the perfect mix of humour and drama that absolutely live for.
Overall I’m excited we’ll be getting a final book about these two adorable idiots next year! I’m really looking forward to seeing how their story ends because they deserve to be happy!
