A Guest in the House by E.M. Carroll
5.0
Emily Carroll is a master at creepy, suspenseful ghost stories, and this full-length graphic novel is a great example. The protagonist, Abby, is a new wife to a dentist in a small summer lakefront town, and step-mother to his daughter. But all may not be as it seems when it comes to the death of his first wife, and both Abby and his daughter sense a ghostly presence in the house and in the water.
Abby's daily life is told mostly in black and white art, but her dreams and ghostly visions are vivid and visceral. You have the sense that she has been repressing feelings and dissociating for a long time and this might give the reader a bit of distance from her as a character. I wasn't sure how I felt about the ending but it does leave the story and the questions it raises stuck in your head in hopefully a pleasantly unsettling way.
