It's rare to find a book with truly fresh ideas and writing so captivating it leaves me in awe
Quicksilver by Callie Hart is that book!
If I'm honest, I'm so gobsmacked by it that I don't know where to start this review, but I'll do my best!
The world-building in this story is everything I need in my fantasy books. It was so vivid and immersive that I was instantly drawn in and able to picture every detail, from the human town to the fae lands, effortlessly
Saeris Fane was the perfect main character! She was strong, feisty, not annoying, and didn't just follow blindly without asking questions. She had hidden powers, so she could've had that overdone "chosen one" complex, but that wasn't the case here
Kingfisher was easy to hate at the start but easy to love by the end. It seemed like he was horrible to Saeris for no real reason at the beginning, and it was hard for me to understand how they would ever get along. I loved that with the single POV, I actually had to wait for him to reveal things about himself and his past as well. I was as in the dark as the FMC was most of the time
The romance was perfectly executed! From the banter to the spice and everything in between, it never felt forced or rushed. It felt natural. There was a bit of instant attraction, but who wouldn't be attracted to Fisher 🤭
Also, the love I have for so many of the side characters is insane. Carrion, anyone?! 😏 I honestly should not be able to fall in love with these characters so easily, but I really did
If I'll say anything about the plot, it's that I absolutely could not, at any point, have told you how it was going to go. This story was full of twists and turns that were so simple yet so complex, and I was hooked from start to finish! And the ending... just pure shock, and that's all I'll say on that
Also, there was a pet fox! We all know I love a cute little animal companion 🥹
Overall, Quicksilver has made its way into my top reads of 2024! It's possibly one of my favourite reads of all time, too! I have no notes.
