Overview

When most people think of Russian literature, they think of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Pushkin. Maybe Chekhov, Gogol, Lermontov, and a few others. This challenge is to read 10 books by Russians* who aren't straight men!

Partly based on my TBR stack of books, and partly based on my outrage that I studied Russian for so long without reading any literature by anyone other than dudes. I love Tolstoy, but there is so much more out there.

Also a general reminder in this time that every country, state, etc., no matter what its government does, is home to queer people and people who hold views opposing the government's actions.

*Note: "Russian" here is defined broadly. Russia is a multi-ethnic country, and the USSR and Russian Empire were as well. Writers included here may not be ethnically Russian, but they have written in Russian and are connected to one of the political entities that have controlled roughly the territory now known as Russia.
