There has been a lot of discord online recently about what constitutes the Black experience and unfortunately, this has prompted some misplaced and in many cases untrue assumptions and dismissive narratives towards Black British people and in some cases, the books they write.
The Fantasy market is inundated with white authors as the standard and with the inclusion of more diverse books including Fantasy, African American literature is also becoming a gamechanger with books like the successful Legendborn cycle taking the book charts by storm.
This prompt then, is to familiarise yourself with books from Black British writers as well as African Americans. While any genre is included, special brownie points for getting to the Fantasy ones since there are so few!
To be Black is both a personal and shared experience that only we can ever truly understand. This should not divide us but instead unite us for the uniqueness of our stories and the positive messages we strive to depict through all of our words.
