I am not affiliated with Laufey or her book club in any way. I just wanted to set this up for others and myself to be able to keep track of reading the book club selections. If you are Laufey or someone on her team and want me to take this down, please let me know and I will gladly do so!

Circe
Madeline Miller
March 2024 - Circe is based on the legend of Circe, a witch encountered by Odysseus in The Odyssey. The mythical world of Circe is full of heroes, gods, and monsters. Women, however, are seen as powerless. Even goddesses. I related to Circe on many levels — it's thematically related to my song "Goddess", where I sing about the difficulties of being a young woman who is portrayed as powerful but faces very normal, mortal struggles as well. The storytelling is amazing and the characters are so vivid. It also happens to be my March book club pick. [Song: Goddess]

The Midnight Library
Matt Haig
April 2024 - The Midnight Library is one of the most impactful books I've read. Set in a dreary town in England (perfect energy for our book club), the reader gets to follow a long as the protagonist receives multiple chances at life, where she gets to experience her many different potential realities. The story forces you to reconsider how thankful you are for you current reality, while also forcing you to think positively about all the potential that you possess given your set of abilities and qualities. I think a lot about the 'Fig Tree Analogy' that Sylvia Plath wrote about in the Bell Jar. If I weren't a singer, what would I be? In a way, this book is fit for dreamers. [Song: Dreamer]

The Talented Mr. Ripley
Patricia Highsmith
May 2024 - The Talented Mr. Ripley is the most beautiful thriller I've read. The Italian landscapes and attractive characters come to life off the page — it's the type of imagery that you'd expect from a romantic novel! This book had me gripping my seat at the cafe, and I recommend it to anyone who would prefer a warm (yet chilling) escape to mid-century Italy. [Song: Bewitched]

Atonement
Ian McEwan
June 2024 - Atonement tells a chilling story of love and sisterhood, as the protagonist, Briony Tallis, looks back on a mistake she made as a child which she spends her life atoning for. Her inner monologue i wonderfully spirited which makes for an engaging saga which I had a hard time putting down. It's set across three different time periods — 1935 England, WW2 England and France, and Present-Day England. [Song: Haunted]

Babel
R.F. Kuang
July 2024 - As someone who grew up between three vastly different cultures, Babel caught my attention because of how well the narrative captured the differences and similarities between them, and was therefore validating to my experience as a mixed-culture and mixed-race person who spent her life navigating friendships and creating art that transcend these differences. Babel was an absolute page turned and I recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful and informative read. [Song: Nocturne]
