In some ways, the first two books in this series seem less like fantasy and more like old-fashioned science fiction, where the “how it works” is the point. Only in this case, the science is sword fighting, tracking, moving silently through the woods, and lighting fires with what you have at hand. The adventure story moved a little slowly. (Switching viewpoints between Gilan, Will, and Halt did create more suspense, however, and speaking of suspense, that ending!)

In this book, the girls start to play significant parts, which was a welcome trend.

This series of books are for boys and I’m a boy so I like the books. Will is cool and I have already started reading the next book. What fun.

This is the second in a series that my oldest has been going through and I've decided to read to follow him around a bit in his choice of literature. I actually liked this one better than the first. I thought it was more engaging and more exciting, especially at the end.
