This installment of the series made Jack Reacher seem like a nosy old man or something. I could never figure out exactly why he became obsessed with the plant.

This is the only Reacher book I've read out of order...and only because I listened to the reviews. It was wordier than I like my Reacher, but still a fun ride. I didn't figure out much of what was going on ahead of time, so that's good.
Yawn. Have to say that was my least favorite Reacher book that I've read to date. As evidenced by how long it took me to get through it. Had a very been there, done that vibe about it. Even the bad guys were mind numbingly dull. Not one of the characters was drawn deeper than teacup saucer. I'd write more in the way of a review, but I honestly don't remember much about any of it.
Hopefully this was a one off stumble and the next Reacher novel is better.

I raced through this one - it wasn't one of the better ones, but still entertaining!
Why do I keep doing this to myself.
Almost got 3 stars for Reachers surprisingly progressive views of Army deserters, then lost it for his weirdly aggressive come-ons to the female cop.

So I got caught out here - moved country, new library, new audiobook selections including...Reacher! Something the old library didn't have. So downloaded and 4 hours later realised it was the abridged version. Arghh!
So, like an even bigger idiot, I decided that I couldn't face having read just the abridged version and got the ebook version as well and read this on my phone. Admittedly there's a lot going against it here.
Well, it starts of interesting. And then it just falls into an endless repetitive cycle of plot where Reacher moves back and forth between Hope and Despair, getting up to the same mischief each time with a very mild variation. And then the batshit crazy ending comes almost out of nowhere and stretches credulity to the limit.
Actually, I think the abridged version was pretty much as good as it needed to be - the extended version really didn't add much except for an awful lot of minutiae, mostly in descriptions of objects and the occasional small scene that added nothing to the plot.
Not the greatest.

Unfortunately I think I've found the dud in the series. I didn't hate it but I just had no interest in what was passed as the plot.

There are two neighbouring towns by the name of Hope and Despair with nothing but miles of empty roadways between them. Intrigued by their names, Jack Reacher decides to check out the towns for himself and find ay reasons for the curious naming behind them. But this is Reacher we are talking about and not everything is about to be smooth and easy. While he was at Despair and sipping on the much-needed cup of coffee, he is asked to leave the town and the police officer cites ‘vagrancy’ as the cause. Of course, Reacher hasn’t done anything other than heading straight for his usual dose of black coffee. In any case, he ends up in Hope, only to find out that a body has been found on the roads between Hope and Despair. Reacher spurns into action doing what he is good at.
Though the theme of Jack Reacher ‘accidentally’ stumbling across big plots in small towns is starting to become old, I cannot deny that I look forward to it. These are the cases where one gets to see how efficient Reacher can really be. I mean walking into something you know you are walking into and handling it is one thing, but walking in without any clue about it and handling the situation is another thing on the whole. Seeing the wheels turn in Reachers mind, with some action on the side, is a pleasure! And Jack Reacher doesn’t disappoint this time either. He is in full steam when he smells the fish. The thing I love about Reacher books is that sometimes there’s a little something sprinkled in the story that hints towards his illustrious yet elusive career in the military that makes you even more curious. We get some of that in this book.
If you have read Jack Reacher before, then this book offers everything you expect from a Reacher novel. If you haven’t read a Reacher novel before, well then go start from the beginning!
