I picked up The Dragon Keeper to check if it was an appropriate read for my son, but I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. The story follows Ping, a young slave who doesn’t even know her own name at the start. As she bonds with a dragon, she begins to discover who she truly is, gaining courage and strength she never thought possible.
Her journey across the country is filled with challenges, and at times, it seems like all hope is lost. But through perseverance, Ping manages to overcome incredible obstacles, making for a compelling and inspiring story. Overall, it’s an enjoyable and well-paced read that blends adventure, growth, and fantasy beautifully.

Despite this being my 3rd time reading this, I’m amazed at how much of the story I’d forgotten and so got to re-live the surprises all over again

With some graphic depictions of violence, I am more than excited that this book is set in Ancient China with proper inclusions of language. The storyline is good, the main character is a woman and grows up having to explore the bigger wider world than the small housing estate she grew up in. It’s a beautiful adventure but I really think it could have gone into more detail of the important parts it rushed over and explained why the dragon – who damn well knew people are assess and is over 1000 years old – was tricked by a lying dumbass. That and I was disappointed by how the ending happened, not by what actually happened.

I borrowed this from a friend a long time ago. True to form, I remembered the cover, but not the story. Honestly, it stood out to me this time more than it did when I was a kid. I love Ping and the dragon's journey together, and something about Ping's matter-of-fact perspective is endearing.

Great blending of chinese mythology and history. One of the freshest dragon stories I've read in years.
