I have to say that I tried this years ago, but reading it did nothing for me and DNF'd it or skimmed it, can't remember. Thankfully I listened to Spencer Cohen and those were love at first listen.

So when I saw it would be out in audio I thought great, 'cos sometimes stories get a lot more depth when they are read by competent narrators and Michael Pauley you were AWESOME!!

Not my favorite of NR Walker's stories but not a bad way to spend 5hrs :)

I really didn't like this book. I didn't like the plot or find the relationship development believable. I can't believe the big tension revolved around the dog. Definitely opting out of this series.

Wow. I have to say that this was probably my least favorite N.R. Walker read. Okay, Isaac and Carter could be cute enough, but there wasn't really anything that excited me in this book that much? Like at all?? It felt fairly rushed, because Isaac and Carter just kinda...became interested in each other after like a few meetings, and then hello, a few months later they love each other! But how did they get there??? A lOT of their relationship was skipped over. And although not as important, the sex? Lackluster. Fairly glossed over and had the feeling of "ugh, do i have to write a sex scene? Well, I guess, all right *huff*" which, even in the most glossed over N.R. sex scenes...they've never felt this glossed over, or rushed. Like, one minute they'd be kissing and the next Carter was already pushing inside Isaac??? And Isaac was a virgin in every sense, but when it came to penetration, he definitely was, and why did it gloss over the prep? Why did it jump around?

Also, Isaac could be extremely annoying. And what also was annoying? The repetition of Carter stating that Isaac was rude because it was a defense mechanism, or saying over and over how unaffectionate Isaac was with his dog, Brady. Also, Carter holding back on saying stuff to Isaac about Brady? annoyed me.

And Isaac lost a dog he was very close to and loved a lot, and so he takes out his pain on the next dog??? Like any dog - or animal - no matter what you feel, deserves that cold distance - not that people have to be affectionate with animals they don't know or like, but if it is YOUR pet and you do like them, but you're just holding back??? Not cool. Especially a guide dog. Like wtf?? The logic with Isaac's behavior with Brady left a lot to be desired.

I dunno. I enjoyed Isaac and Carter in their sweet moments, and I enjoyed a lot of the secondary characters too. But the rest?? Annoyed the crap out of me. I think Walker is capable of a lot better than this, especially in recent years. So maybe she was still working on getting better with her writing in 2013?? I dunno, maybe.

Just, the book was fine. But it was just that, fine. I liked it somewhat, and that's about it.

This is an incredibly sweet slow-burn romance with a couple of surprisingly intense emotional moments thrown in as well. A classic N.R. Walker book, beautifully written and with complex but lovely, three-dimensional characters.
Isaac has known a lot of loss in his life and as a result has an understandably hard time letting people, or an utterly lovable and smart dog, into his heart. He’s never been in a relationship and doesn’t seem to have much of a social circle outside his work and family. When he meets Carter, there’s an almost instant connection between the two men and it was quite endearing to see them slowly circle each other and get closer step by prudent step.
However, there are some bumps along the way that they need to overcome and learn how to deal with as a couple. Isaac has a temper and a tendency to lash out rather than show his vulnerability or talk something out calmly. The moments when he does open up about how he feels though, are wonderfully written and deeply moving.

2-2.5 stars

there were cute parts but i was just annoyed either with the narrator because he sounds so close to John Solo and I honestly hate John Solo's narrations (but that is a whole other rant). But as for this book i don't think this was a hit for me. After reading NR Walkers Red Dirt Heart series i am having a hard time finding other books of hers living up to that standard.

So i don't think i am going to continue with the next book since i lost interest in the characters around 60%, but wanted to see how it ended and if Brady would get some love.
