This is a fun one, where fictional Horowitz is accused of murder and actually detained for a while. He calls Hawthorne in a panic, who then starts investigating the death of a theater critic. As is the norm in these novels, many people hate the victim.

The twists are great. However, it is also jumping the shark. The detective inspectors (introduced in the last book) are over the top unlikeable and incompetent. There is a self-consciously Agatha Christie gathering of all the suspects. And fictional Horowitz and his wife have a weird relationship, where he can gone all the time, even overnight, and she shrugs it all off even after the police come to her door.

I think these books get better as I become more invested in Hawthorne. This one had me hooked, I guessed the killer and motive very early on but the twists we took to get there. I loved how theater was the backdrop of this story.

This is such a fun series on audiobook! I can't wait to read more.

I’ve not read the other books in this series but my 9 year old gave me this for Christmas (apparently he was intrigued by the cover) and so I had to read it. It was so clever. The author was the main character in a murder mystery. Now I want to read books 1-3!

This one dragged quite a bit for me. I just couldn’t get into the mystery or any of the characters. I also didn’t like how
he introduced an entire new element to the mystery half way through the book that was key to solving it

The blurring of the line between reality and fiction also continues to unsettle me. I’ll probably pick up the next book in this series some time down the line when I have a lull in library loans, but I’m not itching to do it any time soon.
