Having had a husband who was both a gambler and a drunk, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I might have. Amado is certainly very entertaining with his laughing at everybody from the charming Vidinho to his poor desperate wife to the acerbic mother, and everybody else with their double standards, and he has a lovely way with language.

Little tough to get into and the story seemed to drag a bit. Great concept and lots of lessons about love and life.

I was so looking forward to this book. While I enjoyed the story, the 600 pages of it was just too much.

The trials of married life as seen through the empathetic lens of Brazilian Nordestino life in the 1960s. Amado's folkloric view of Brazil can often feel reductive but also has such sincerity to it. With such a wide cast of vibrant characters (too many for proper characterization), a genuine sense of community is built.

Amado captures many of the complexities of relationships that compel me; repressed desire, forgiveness in the face of grave injustice, negotiating living spaces, social pressure, etc. It's a literal battle between the rational and emotional minds, resolved in the synthesis of the two. My principal gripe with Amado's storytelling is his insistence on lingering on the least compelling aspects of his world. This includes a flood of fictional name dropping and repeating events to demonstrate a character's motivations with nothing gained for the reader. As a result, certain sections become a slog of vapid prose which unnecessarily extends a potentially great narrative into a 500+ page mediocrity. Amado struggles to reconcile his worldbuilding (which ambitiously seeks to incorporate all aspects of Brazilian life) with the intimate storytelling prowess he clearly possesses.

Still, I enjoyed diving into Amado's Brazil and I hope to engage more with Brazilian literature and film in 2022. Speaking of which, I will try to track down a copy of the film adaptation which seems to focus on the most fascinating area of the novel: Dona Flor eliminating her repression by unifying her two marriages.

I definitely hurt my enjoyment by stretching this reading out over an embarrassing several months but powering through the last section in a day has invigorated my joy for reading (and influenced me to join this site). I briefly considered doing star ratings ala Letterboxd but I think that would give me an aneurysm based on the absurd amount of time I've devoted to assigning ratings on that site.
