I don't usually like story collections from writers whose novels I liked. But this one was very enjoyable. Different vibe to "The Book of Joan", perhaps even more personal. Enjoyable.

Rating short story collections is hard. There were a few stories I quite liked (The Organ Runner, Cosmos, How To Lose An I), but most of the stories read like their only purpose was shock value, and I found that very off-putting.

Not my favorite Yuknavitch. Sometimes I think I’m not tough enough to enjoy her work fully.

really really enjoyed the audiobook of this, the different narrators for each chapter immersed me in an unexpected way. i was very hesitant when first reading (listening) because short story collections are not a fav of mine, but i am so glad i stepped out of my comfort zone for this book!

This one doesn't always work for me, but when it does ("Organ Runner," "Eleventh Commandment," "How to Lose an I") it's exceptional.

This book is definitely not for the faint of heart; each essay has a new trigger, ranging from sexual harassment, drug use, and much more. However, I felt drawn to the book; I could hardly put it down. I still can't figure out if I truly found the writing style refreshing or if it was just me being continually surprised about the discussion of another taboo subject. I would recommend reading it at least once, but I can't see myself rereading it ever again in the future.
