Anyways, I enjoyed the spin on classic fairytales it, it was interesting and fun to read. Also I love how culturally diverse the characters were! I did a little cheer each time they weren’t defaulted to being white. Plus the ways that aspects of their backgrounds were integrated into the story really added to the reading experience for me.
Here’s my ranking of the short stories:
1) Beauty and the Beast (the “is he rich?” line really sealed the deal for me)
2) Hansel and Gretel (this is a Shakuntala stan account)
3) Rupunzel
4) Peter Pan (this temporarily filled my little hopeless romantic heart, and it was much appreciated)
5) Little Mermaid
6) Snow White
7) Cinderella
8) Jack and the Beanstalk
9) Bluebeard
10) Sleeping Beauty (I’m still kinda confused about what actually happened in this story)
11) Red Riding Hood (my 14 year old Wattpad reading self really came out here, thinking there was going to be some sort of werewolf romance subplot 🙄. Embarrassing.)
12) Rumpelstiltskin
Graphic: Misogyny and Sexism
Moderate: Racism, Toxic relationship, Murder, and Abandonment
Minor: Animal death, Child death, Infidelity, and Death of parent

Soman Chainani took these stories (most of which are problematic) and made them relevant, feminist, and enjoyable.
