this is a 4.5 star book of stories, rounded down because a few of the stories were not super compelling to me. but as always, i love ursula leguin and i appreciate her ability to translate the deeply thought and deeply felt onto the page.

The Hainish stories in this book are true 5-star gems, among her best.

Sometimes I love Le Guin's books, sometimes not so much. Once I started reading this one, I remembered that I had read it before, but not all the details (for instance, did I like it or not?). The book has a great title, and the story of the same name is an excellent end to this collection of stories. It relates directly to the two stories preceding it, and all three are stellar.

An absolutely splendid anthology of science fiction. LeGuin is my literary guiding star. If I can be even a little bit as amazing as her I could die happy.

This just isn’t for me. I can’t make myself read more or else it’ll make my reading slump worse, so I’d rather DNF and pick something else up.

An odd collection, this, in that the first few stories felt very different from the final three, but they're all still excellent. I loved The Rock That Changed Things and Another Story, but my favourite was actually Newton's Sleep which felt very relevant to conversations being had today - to all those tech bros saying we'll just go to Mars when we've messed up earth beyond recovery, Le Guin reminds them / us that we can't do easily escape where we've come from.
