I found this hard to rate because I haven't read much poetry to compare it to. I landed on 4 stars because although I didn't love every poem, I learned a great deal from this collection. Sadly, I did not know anything about the context of the New Cross fire, but this collection did a really great job at conveying the raw emotions surrounding it. It is extremely moving.

More poetry, although altogether different from my more recent fare.
Legacies of violence (in this case, state-sanctioned/ordained) abound, as Bernard explores the historic New Cross fire and its resonances in contemporary and historic politics and culture. Mirrors and echoes and ghosts populate the poems, grounded to the Earth by the material reality of what they've left behind.

informative
I'm not going to rate this because I know very little about poetry. It was an interesting read and I liked the way it told the story of the New Cross Fire. It was informative and thought-provoking. Some poems I liked more than others but it was a good read overall.
