I thought this was slightly slow moving at the beginning, but it really picked up and makes the listener/reader think deeply about the conspiracy aspect of the debt collection industry while showing how ruthless and corrupt they are.

*Disclaimer: My score is a bit biased due to the fact that Covid is being used as a plot point. While I understand that it will forever be a huge part of our history, I personally prefer to stay away from stories that are directly referencing Covid in their plot*

Extremely good story. It was so engaging that I extended my walk an extra 10 minutes because I had to finish it. The narrator was an excellent choice and did an amazing job. I can't say enough about how good this was. Listen to it right away, but make sure you have time to finish in one sitting because you won't want to stop. As usual with short stories, I would have liked the ending to be a little more spelled out, but authors don't seem to want to do that.

I was excited when I saw this author had a story in one of these short read series. I found it hard to engage with, however. There's a lot of telling, not showing. The main character isn't rounded out beyond her neurodiversity until well into the story. There's an interesting mix of recent Australian history with that from the early days of white settlement, but it's an uneasy mix. A fair degree of thought and planning obviously went into it, but it comes across more as a detailed outline for a longer piece than as a successful shorter story.

this was not for me.
i disliked how the character was portrayed and how her possible neurodivergency was used.
the writing felt dragged out, the characters don’t work for me and while the plot itself might have been good in other situations, it didn’t work for me.

Alison is a young Autistic woman with Tourette’s who gets a notice of an overpayment by a government agency that she needs to repay. .Alison is very literal and knows that she does not owe the money. With support from her grandfather and mother she takes on the agency. Interesting premise that could have been more developed. Recommend as audiobook.

I have read all seven of the stories in the A Point in Time collection. Naomi's Gift by Martha Hall Kelly is an excellent story of a baby born at Ravensbrück. Ash Wednesday by Paula McLain is another excellent, but gut-wrenching story of a Collinwood, Ohio school fire in 1908. Landing by Olivia Hawker is a good story about a newly married couple; the husband works excessive hours as an engineer at NASA preparing for the Apollo moon landing and his new wife is home expecting the birth of their firstborn. We are Bone and Earth by Esi Edugyan was informational, unexpected, and very interesting. It was way too short, and I want to know so much more about Sisi and what comes next. A Wild Rose by Fiona Davis is probably my favorite of this collection, it's about a concert pianist, Carnegie Hall, and Carnegie Studio Towers. While my piano skills are rudimentary, this book made me wish I had practiced more. Alison's Conviction by Thomas Keneally was a good story, but I was disappointed that Alison did not have a resolution to her issue with Robodebt. I also had a little trouble with some of the Australian colloquialisms and words. Mother Swamp by Jesmyn Ward is another excellent short story in this collection about an escaped slave colony in the Great Dismal Swamp. I highly recommend this collection, but especially Mother Swamp.
