Cute enough. Slim as heck.

The summary of this book had me very excited, but it did not live up to the potential in multiple ways.

First, the culture felt wedged in and Spanish words were inserted in a very awkward fashion. This was obviously not written by someone familiar with Spanish or the world this was supposed to be set in. Second, the plot was quite simplistic and somehow still managed to be confusing. There were abrupt and unexplained changes in characters, there were a couple odd jumps in time that took close watching to figure out what had happened and the story had inconsistent pacing. Finally, the phrasing was confusing and unnecessarily awkward throughout.

Ultimately, this simply didn't sparkle. It's not awful if you already have it, but there are much better fairy tale adaptations out there you should pick up instead.

Brief fantasy for early readers. Almost too brief - I want to read the version of this story for 4th-5th graders. But it was lovely nonetheless. Illustrations were very nice.
