What a powerful read - I'll write a review soon, but for now I think I want to let the tones of the epilogue settle within me

I'm stunned I've never heard of this before. Perhaps that says more about me than about broader tastes though.

Pretty much every part of the plot and world building is running at peak performance. It's standard scifi ideas made fresh, far flung politics made relevant and stories made essential to a highly scientific world. The construction of the Shrike is particularly impressive, and even the eventual explanation for what's going on with the creature doesn't rob it of it's other worldly horror. After all, when science advances far enough it is functionally indistinguishable from magic.

It was absolutely phenomenal. Its books like these that make being a reader worthwhile. I will forever cherish this experience of Hyperion. It was nothing short of a singularity, this reading experience will never be replicated in the future I am sure because nothing will beat it and everything I have ever read in the past pales before it. Three cheers for Hyperion! For Dan Simmons! And for Space Opera September Readathon 2021 which prompted me to experience this gem!

A story of supreme intelligence!
More relevant today than when it was published.

If you like pontificating on subjects of religion and philosophy you must read this.
If you are disheartened by our own growing technology you must read this.

Just read it.. you will be so glad you did.

Wow! Quelle série! Un deuxième tome qui ne m’a peut-être pas touché aussi émotivement que le premier, mais une intrigue aussi solide et complexe qui regroupe les mêmes personnages si bien développés. Bien hâte de voir ce qui adviendra!

I'm really not sure how to rate or review this book, so I'm not going to at this time. But I will pass on a few things:

1. There is some very, VERY explicit content. (I picked this up by recommendation without doing any research on it)
2. The ending was pretty disappointing after all the groundwork that was laid.

It's a story that echoes the Decameron and The Canterbury Tales, seven people tell the stories behind their going to Hyperion. Home to the Shrike and some tombs that no-one understands. Shrike will give one of them their wish but the others will die.

It's interesting and while the story continues into other books it doesn't induce me to continue reading.
