Check trigger warnings before reading. Dark concept but a great book overall.

Wow.

Listened to this on Stephanie's channel.

It's a different plot than the conventional murder mystery thriller book plots. A breath of fresh air i guess.

Pretty interesting and tense

The book was fairly fast-paced, it never felt it was dragging on in any places. I think the ending left some things to be desired but it was overall a good read. If you like dark books, thrillers or crime related books you’ll probably enjoy this one. I would recommend it if you’re in a reading rut— I finished the book in a day and a half.

"The carousel’s over now,” he tells her quietly. “This time your family is waiting for you." I don't normally put quotes in my review but damn this on was good.

This book had me super hooked from the first page. I loved how the book switched from the interview to Maya's time in the garden. The detectives did get on my nerves when they would interrupt her.

Maya's character is so great to me. She has been through so much in her life, but every time she has been able to become a better person because of it. Her personality is one I really enjoy from a character. In a dark book like this it's good to have a funny character with a little humor. Her life was horrible, but hopefully her life gets better after this book.

I kinda feel bad for The Gardener. Yes, he did horrible things that are not justifiable, but I feel like he really did feel like he was giving the butterflies a good life. I HATE AVERY WITH EVERY BONE IN MY BODY. He was such a horrible man. He got what he deserved in the end.

I thought the ending was a little weird. I thought that the "plot twist" was really dumb. I am curious about what the other books could be about.

This was a book I struggled to fully digest, but absolutely loved. Dot did a wonderful job describing the Garden and the Butterflies in such a beautiful way that I had to constantly remind myself that this was a terrible place where terrible things happen. Definitely my favorite book of 2023 so far!

This is a very challenging read since it touches on some very traumatic themes and actions. I found that they way the author unfolds the story and utilizes the unique voice of the main character to be an admirable way to speak on such difficult things.

It's easy for me to be turned off from any story which involves female pain because so often it is done for shock factor or as a means to push forth a man's storyline or character development. However, the reality is that women experience a myriad of trauma due to their gender, and to avoid ever writing about wouldn't serve us either.

Dot Hutchison does a wonderful job of creating complex characters who are flawed and beautiful, and through their eyes we are able to digest the horrors of this book alongside the triumphs. So, while the plot might be one hindering on the suffering of girls, the lesson we learn is about love, family and sisterhood.

I loved this book.

Kept me hooked with so many new pieces of the puzzle being revealed page by page. Complicated narrator (Maya) that you learn to like.
The twist of Sophia being the escaped butterfly feels so last minute and not necessary. Also to drop the fact one of Sophia’s daughter’s biological father is the gardener and then end the book, with the sequels covering totally different cases, felt unfinished.
