Margaret Campbell is a distinguished pathologist specialising in burns but when her personal life falls apart she takes up an offer to leave Chicago and be a guest lecturer in Beijing. Li Yan is a career police officer in China, mentored by his uncle Li has been promoted to a senior role. Three bodies are found in Beijing, a rare thing as Communist China has a low murder rate. However the three must be linked as by each body was found the same clue. Margaret is asked to consult as one body was found burned but as she and Li work together they realise that the crimes may be a cover up for something even more serious.
This is an early novel from May and I had really enjoyed the Lewis Trilogy set in Scotland so was interested to see what his earlier writing was like. The scope of this book is far greater than the later novels and the writing is far more formulaic. It is almost as though May had come up with an idea and written a fairly standard thriller by numbers. However the premise is interesting and the setting in hardline Communist China does throw up lots of opportunities for culture clash

I'd give this 2.5 stars if I could. It's not a bad police procedural, it's just that it was not particularly great, and I expect more from Peter May. I do believe this was one of his early books, though, so I'm willing to cut him some slack. Might even check the next in the series if nothing better comes along.

An American doctor is thrown into a Chinese murder investigation that is more than it seems, and she learns a bit more than she expects. Has a lot of good detail about how the Chinese system works, very different from the American one.

This is my second book by the same author and I feel the same way. He just isn't a good writer. The premise is interesting. An American forensic pathologist goes to China to teach a course for 6 months. I wanted to like the book but the writing was poor. It was long winded and uninteresting, it took a lot of words to say a few things and the characters didn't come across as being real or 3 dimensional. When I found myself forcing myself to continue to read the book I dnf'd it.

I read this upon recommendation from my mum. Pulpy thrillers aren't usually my bag, but I adored this book. I read the second one in a day, and I'm already on to the third. There are 6 books total in the series, and a seventh, shorter novella. What I love about the China Thriller series is that they're so easy to read, there's an interesting but not difficult murder plot, intertwined with the romance between the main characters Detective Li Yan and Pathologist Margaret Campbell, as well as giving you a healthy dose of Chinese history and culture. I'm hooked.
Specifics to the first in the series 'The Firemaker', Peter May clearly knows and loves writing about Beijing and the Chinese police. I also like the characterisation of all the characters. Yes Li and Maragret (especially Margaret) are a little caricaturish to emphasise culture differences and are largely unlikeable, but they're interesting to read. I especially loved Yongli, Lotus, and Old Yifu. The time is was set in is also interesting as you see Beijing becoming more globalised as it accepts capitalism. The pace moved at a steady pace and although I had guessed the overarching theme/motive/big baddie (again, very relevant for the time it was set in), there were still plenty of twists and little shocks that got me, especially in the last third of the book!

Na trilogii z ostrova Lewis to sice nemá ale i tak je to kurevsky dobrá kniha. Ten May sna musí mít korejský předky. Podařilo se mu do jedné knihy zakomponovat několik žánrů aniž by to působilo blbě nebo lacině. Škoda, že alespoň já jsem si zápletku knihy domyslel už během té scény uvítacího večírku.

This has way to much emotion for me, there’s a murder case but it seemed like the author wanted me to care more about a love story between main characters which I couldn’t gel with and felt was far too sexually graphic when it didn’t have to be.
Graphic: Racism, Sexual content, Violence, Blood, and Murder
