This was a DNF halfway through. This one was so disappointing. The MC is in love with himself and his ABSURD knowledge of guns and "special forces" techniques and training. Also, he's a deadbeat dad. The only saving grace to the half of the story I read was the fucking dog. That's all.
Moderate: Gun violence

This book was a frustration sandwich for me. It starts off poorly when Alex decides to enter a magical doorway rather than, (anything more sensible), go to his daughter's fourth birthday party. Asshole!
Then we feature a world portrayed simply as "everything is bigger." That's it, just universal gigantism. Sigh. Let's just forget about the biomass pyramid.
But what broke my will was the complete lack of any core military doctrine from this supposedly special forces, trained soldier. He does no reconnaissance, ignores known facts (oh they're using a trebuchet?), and walks his men into an obvious trap while under no external pressure. It didn't help that the narrator kept saying "Notch their arrows" rather than "Nock." I had to stop to preserve my sanity.

This series is very different than the middle falls series and I had a hard time getting started in the book, but once I got a couple hours in it really clicked and held me to the end. So it took me quite a while to read the first 15% but then I could not put it down and finished the rest in a day.
I have a feeling that now that I am immersed in the world I will chew through the rest of the series. Shawn Inmon is a prolific author who I enjoy reading his books so I am looking forward to immersing myself in another world he has created.
