This is my first Agatha Christie book. I should have expected it due to the age of the writing, but the casual racism kept surprising me.

I also think my experience suffered a bit from the "Seinfeld is Unfunny" phenomenon where I've read so many mysteries that are inspired by and derivative of Agatha Christie that reading the original ends up feeling a bit unoriginal.

I felt that the writing was a bit too repetitive and held the reader's hand too much in the first half and then jumped too quickly in the second half to keep the reader from figuring the mysteries out themselves. I can see though how it would be more satisfying as a re-read (or re-watch as a film) once you know the reveals and can see how the clues were there all along.

The writing felt like it would easily translate to a film script, it's mostly dialogue and essentially stage directions of how characters are moving about and reacting to things.

The perspective is third person and not limited to Poirot himself, which I thought was interesting.

This was the perfect book to read for a couple days on Vacation. The ending is completely unexpected, but well led up to, and I really liked some of the characters. However, there were a couple loose ends left at the end, which I would’ve wanted to know the answer to.
Like did Christine and Smith ever get married? Did Jackie give herself and Simon in to the police? (I might’ve just misunderstood that)
My rating was also brought down just by the fact that it’s so short, and I prefer to get fully sucked into a book/play.

I loved this book! Poirot is my favorite character of Agatha Christie's, and he was great in this story. Christie is a master of mystery, and I was blown away by her ability to construct such an interesting and intricate story. I loved the way she wrapped up the mystery, I never would have guessed! I highly recommend the read.

It has been my goal to read the Hercule Poirot Mysteries in order (and so far I have with 1-11!), but with the release of the new Kenneth Branagh movie, my fiancé told me I had to read it before spoiling it with watching. She’s right of course (and always is). And I’m certainly glad I read it first.

So as of right now I’ve read books 1-11, Hercule Poirot’s Christmas, Hallowe’en Party, and probably 1-2 dozen short stories, and Death on the Nile is definitely far above the others in terms of complexity. There is quite literally over half a dozen crimes committed in this one! I do not have a logical or meticulous mind, so to me it still feels like maybe she’s just pulling facts and clues out of a hat, but damn do I enjoy reading it. Of course all of these mysteries involve crime, so you’re reading a lot of murder, thievery, debauchery, but wow this one in particular was very very dark.

Why does it seem like Hercule can never take a dang vacation? His little grey cells are just too powerful.
