About 4 months ago I found myself at Southbank (Brisbane) with some TIME TO KILL I should also add that I have been a bit obsessed with attempting to see something in every public venue in QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre). With the thought that I could kill two birds with one stone, rocked up to the box office and found that Tim Minchin was on stage in the Concert Hall in conversation about his book, this book. "GOT ANY TICKETS LEFT?" was my question at the Box Office, "Yes," was the answer but they are in the choir stalls, behind the stage. So that's have I managed to be perhaps one the the closest audience members to this interesting man but generally only seeing the back of his head.
Tim had come to Brisbane to promote his book, I kind of knew him and his work, but myself and close to 1600 other people were prepared to spend $60 on a Saturday afternoon to LISTEN TO HIM Oh the $60 was the cheap seats we had; the cost to see him close up front on was may more, but then this is a man who writes words in song, in speeches, and this book. I did not need to constantly gaze on his face; the back of his head was interesting enough, but I did appreciate his words. Then four months later (ie now) I GOT MY HANDS ON A COPY of the book. Which contains the contents of three speeches, some of which can be viewed on the Internet, but as always, the BOOK IS BETTER.
There will be some people who would say publishing those speeches in a slim hardback book is a total WANK; and they might be right. But there are nuggets of wisdom in there; and the illustrations are AMAZING.
Now this book, THAT I READ, belongs to the public library; but I tell you I NEED A COPY for my personal library; because I think sometimes you need to GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE NUGGETS.
Finis.
