Inspiring message from Scovel Shinn. Can be transformative if you let it but great self improvement information. This book shows tat manifestation is possible, but I feel that you also need to be proactive in the idea so that it is both faith and actions through your way of life.
I read this book at the recommendation of someone I respect and admire, and I can appreciate the core message of this book, which I take to be this: If you constantly worry and visualize a certain reality - be it rags or riches, illness or perfect health, failed married or eternal bliss - it will make a mark so strong on your subconscious that you will create that reality. Hmmm. I'm still not sure I can buy this, and yet, this is not to be confused with the power of healthy, abundant, positive thoughts in all areas of our life. Disease can certainly come from stress and anxiety, and our goals are far more effortless if we can see ourselves achieving them and living them. Yes, there is no argument with the premise, but this premise is taken way WAY too far. Am I a pessimist or a negative Nelly? Maybe. Or maybe I need a different delivery of the same message, and to that end, I've read tons of other books which do a better job (see the history of my books on Goodreads for ideas.)
My issue with the book was the over-simplicity of it, with the examples that were you simplistic, they seemed almost offensive to one's intellect. Again, I can appreciate the message of the book, just not the delivery. Also, the book heavily draws from and references to the Christian faith and the Bible and since I am not a Christian, it was with a healthy distance that I was reading and absorbing the message.
I would have liked the book so much more if the author had elaborated on the concepts in more depth rather than jumping in each instance to her super simplistic a-woman-came-to-me stories.
And no I don't recommend this book, but I'm glad I read it.
Some of the passages that I liked:
“There is a place that you are to fill and no one else can fill, something you are to do, which no one else can do.”
“Why are ye fearful, oh ye of little faith?”
It is the law of nonresistance, which is so little understood.
Someone has said that courage contains genius and magic. Face a situation fearlessly, and there is no situation to face...
False growths are caused by jealousy, hatred, unforgiveness, fear, etc. Every disease is caused by a mind not at ease.
The subconscious, being simply power without direction, carries out orders without questioning.

I listened to The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn as an audiobook, which is something I don’t usually do—but I found it surprisingly enjoyable. The book is a simple yet profound guide to manifestation and positive thinking, offering timeless wisdom in an easy-to-understand way.

Read half of it and decided to give up, found it to be a waste of time. It's full of logical contradictions within the arguments of the author's ideas.

Perfectly aligns with my current spiritual journey!
My oldest told me he was reading this book. I read it so we can talk about it. It seems a spiritualized Law of Attraction.
Published in 1925, this book reads like a "new age" manual with its focus on the power of positive affirmations. The techniques are timeless and beautifully presented within the context of the teachings of Christ. "The Game of Life" is for people of all faith traditions and will grant every reader renewed confidence in their ability to play (and win) at the game of life.
Didn't realize this was a religious book, but I really should try the manifestation the book promotes. I mean, people are starting to say we live in a simulation, and if that's true, why wouldn't I just imagine something amazing happening so it then happens. Let's just all do that. Honestly a bit of a forgettable book when all is said and done though.
