didn't like the pictures

I love Duncan Tonatiuh's work, but this is an example of why even marginalized people need cultural accuracy editing when working outside their own lived experience. The first super weird thing is that in the book proper, one single name has pronunciation guide written into the prose, while everything else in Portuguese, both names and concepts, are just written without italics or parentheticals, with guides relegated to the glossary, so it stands out as extremely odd. And the glossary! Hella yikes! Very obvious that the person who wrote it does not speak Brazilian Portuguese. Nearly all the pronunciation suggestions were wrong and adhered more to Latin American Spanish or European Portuguese, which is an extremely common error, but that doesn't make it excusable or any less obnoxious. Supes weird and annoying, no thanks. Brazilian Portuguese is a party in your mouth and this glossary was an inaccurate bummer and a half. I also felt like some of the plotting and pacing here was a bit off, but overall it's a welcome book about a subject I haven't seen before in a picture book (which is why I love Tonatiuh! he just obviously does not have an ear for Brazilian Portuguese, or the uncredited glossary writer does not).
