This was decently written, and was an easy read. However, the protagonist was a self pitying piece of shit and despicable in every way. The fact that it apparently draws such a parallel to the authors own life at the time of writing is just…. Yeah. Yuck

I've read this unaware of the controversy behind the similarities of the plot to the author's life. in light of them, i definitely think this is an interesting book to think about the ethics of fiction and whether there might be a duty to leave some things unsaid. Beyond that, looking at the novel, without the context, I was not sold. The musings of the main, supposedly troubled character felt very self-obssessed, immature, pretentious  and at times, per my margin notes, made me want to murder him. Terrifying to think that there might grown man, fathers!, having half of these types of exalted, teenage, sex-obssesive thoughts. The form of the novel feels like theatrical? I can imagine it as a monologue on stage much more readily than i can imagine a grown man thinking that
I did like Asif though, want to believe there is more men like him.
