The depiction of the fae is so in line with the traditional perception, so deliciously dark as they follow their nature and aren't romanticised. I enjoyed the world a lot, every new fae or creature we encountered was so wonderfully different, some twisted, some hauntingly beautiful.

And Valroy is a real villain, unapologetic, arrogant and cruel since that is his nature. I enjoyed his development and the fact that it didn't feel forced. Abigail was a lot of fun as well, her fiery nature and temper peeking out despite how terrified she was. I loved to see her
recognise she was lying to herself about her wishes. And also the infernal fight between making the right choice for her and the right choice for the world. She is quite heroic.

I wish we got to see more of different characters, though the ones that we got to know so far have intrigued me.

I was also intrigued by the themes of desire, sexuality and consent through the eyes of both the heroine and our villain.
the lines of consent were blurred so many times, but considering Valroy is painted as a villain and it's in the nature of the fae, I didn feel like the dubious consent scenes were romanticised for the reader.

What I didn't enjoy as much was the pace of the book, I found it a bit boring at times as it was quite slow-paced and I found some scenes quite a hassle to get through. And the language was a bit convoluted at times so I had to reread paragraphs to understand exactly what was happening. I'm glad I stuck with it as overall it was a very enjoyable read.

Excellent book! Highly recommend.

Note this is a dark fantasy romance, so characters are not prince and princess charming. They take time to warm up to and are morally grey (mmc is). Check content warnings!

Expect:

- enemies to lovers
- captive/captor
- games
- great banter
- fast paced
- great tension
- slowww burn

Overall 4.5 ⭐️

Spice 1/5 🔥 her books seem to start slow but then ultra ramp up in the next books.

God I don’t know how this book was such an incredible train wreck. Like, the beginning? So good! Loved the scorned wife dynamic she had going. And then I really couldn’t understand the pace or the story of this book. Nothing made sense. The timeline was so horribly horribly off. There was a chunk in the middle that was just so bad that I stopped reading for like 4 months. The ending??? Pisses me off. But only because there’s a second book and honestly I would have liked it if that was the end honestly. Read those triggers because holy shit.

I can't rate this a 5 solely because it was unsatisfying in the way it left me wanting more. thankfully there is more but holy shit holy shit holy shit!!!

my heart was in my throat for the whole last chapter. my heart was pounding while reading the whole book.

most fantasy enemies to lovers books do one of two things: enemy does bad things with good intentions, or out of misunderstandings, or is in some way cursed or forced to be bad, or enemy falls in insta-love and suddenly regrets everything he's done as he develops empathy.

this one does neither. Valroy does bad things because he has to but also because he wants to. there is a twinge of pity and empathy in the fact that he was created for the purpose of cruelty, that it's all he's ever known, but he revels in it and does not wish to stop and this is unacceptable to Abigail. He doesn't even seem to understand why she finds him so abhorrent which makes it even harder to untangle her feelings for him.

Abigail is a perfect character. From first meeting she is downtrodden but warm-hearted, not in a Pollyanna cheerful way but just someone with a deep sense of empathy and justice. She's scrappy and insightful but she doesn't have the power to actually win her battles. The war between her lust and loathing for Valroys is much more palpable and realistic than other fantasy e2l protags and I adored everything she did.

The setting is lush and intricately woven, the side characters are vibrant and lovable, the writing style had me desperately flipping to the next chapter, and I'm writing this as fast as I can so I can get to the sequel. Fucking stellar.

Okay so let me just start off by saying this book sounded like something right down my alley. Dark male character. Witty spitfire female main character that practices witchcraft. But he threatens to SA her for literally no reason, multiple times, and he toys with her like a cat and mouse games. I just couldn’t give this book a higher rating for that reason. SA is no joke nor something you should include in your books without a trigger warning
