This series of investigations got pretty grim. The bizarre religious fanatics at the start, the benign HP-looking young man, the weird treasure hunt letters. After about the halfway point, I was legitimately suspicious of a few things. There were connections been the different cases, but it didn't quite line up until the end. I appreciated the coroner's commentary & unusual agreement with Salvo (even telling him he'd already vomited himself) as things came together. It actually made me worry for Ingrid during the dinner. Thank goodness for the rest of the team.
Moderate: Animal death, Cursing, Death, Murder
Minor: Rape, Blood, Dementia, Stalking
An unexpected high point in the series. There is an unusually gruesome scene which probably warrants docking a star, but Montalbano is in fine form, the supporting cast is strong, and the plot is interesting and well-paced. Amazingly consistent quality for 16 books. Looking forward to the 17th!
Well I have to give it 4 stars because of the ongoing characters, their dialogue and humour - plus the food - as these are always fun to read.
The plot this time around is a bit hit and miss and I have to say it might be jumping the shark with the psychopath straight out of Hollywood towards the end. And the plot just lost total touch with reality when it came to his reasons for hiding the dolls at his house. Luckily these two things didn't play a significant part of proceedings.
I wish he would ditch Livia once and for all. She is such a pain...

Ah Commissario you have lost the touch, not talking about food much, having a duel with a young killer. Weakest Montalbano book so far.
