"I see you and I perceive that the very edges of your body are a blur. You don't know where you end. You are nibbled at by vagueness."
----------
This book is so mentally ill, I love it. It was kind of what I wished Han Kang's The Vegetarian was.
How does one even go about writing a book like this? It is so uncanny, so funny and so deeply cultish. I was really quite surprised that this is the author's debut book.

The whole story revolves very tightly around the body image as linked to identity in the most unhinged way possible. It is about occupying space physically as it is about occupying space mentally. With strange undercurrents of dystopia, magical realism, and downright weirdness, this was an unexpectedly gripping and reflective read.

too much discussion of eating disorder stuff in a way that was not fun to read, including calorie counting and explicit under eating within the first half hour of the book.

Well written but confusing; I probably should’ve DNF’d it.

Very strange book in a good way. Reminds me of Black Mirror a lot. Sad to see it getting bad reviews but I can see how it might not be everyone's cup of tea. Only giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because the ending was underwhelming. Other than that loved it!

*Definitely don't read this if you struggle with disordered eating, and read the other trigger warnings too*

It’s very slow. It’s strange, but a numbed and bleak kind. If you want strong plot, this one isn’t for you. If you like movies like Being John Malkovich, you’ll probably like this.

An odd book with multiple capitalist motifs around advertising, superstores, beauty and body, processed food, and television entertainment; these build and combine in the personal and specific, marking out strange tensions in relationships, in self-image and drive, until the self becomes little more that the vehicle of the commodity. I keep thinking about this book. The narrator is hardly there, but she is imprinted on my thoughts—and her desires, her memories, her observations and fears create conflict because, despite the fragmenting of her agency, they are too much. The last third of the novel lost momentum, and I’m not sure I liked the ending. Nonetheless, it was a fascinating read. An eerie, full experience.

I really liked the book at first but lost the plot in part 3.
