Disclaimer: I am not someone who has struggled with depression or suicidal thoughts. In fact, my issues tend to be on the anxiety end with intrusive thoughts about NOT wanting myself or my loved ones to die. In general I am someone who at baseline already loves life and finds joy and meaning and purpose in it and the small connections it brings. So maybe that is why this book was not for me. I like A Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life as much as the next guy but The Midnight Library felt like all those same tropes over again without necessarily that much new to say, and in what felt to me was a pretty simplistic/stereotypical view of depression. I get the lesson it was trying to teach - life is worth living, and not just an alternate reality life where you made different choices, but YOUR life, this one, right now - but I’m not sure if I needed the lesson, or in this way. But again, someone with different experiences from me  might. And to be fair, I did cry a bit at the end, as I always will with a good depiction of finding joy and purpose in life.

This is the first fiction book I’ve read since I was a child. I never had before because I have aphantasia (I can’t see images in my head) so it always felt like I was just mindlessly digesting words.

But this is a work of art, I found myself genuinely laughing and crying throughout the chapters, It was so beautifully written, so emotive. This is going to be a hard act to follow when I read my next fiction book.
