This is likely the most boring book I have read in a while, maybe ever. It felt like 2000 pages, not 200.

I think Zola relies on an audience familiar with the Parisian high society and uses pseudonyms to criticize and satirize their vices and greed. But as a person reading this 150 years later, the detail is entirely lost on me, and all that is left are meandering sentences that quickly touch upon references whose significance is lost on me.

Another huge fault in my opinion is the complete lack of character development. There is not a single character whose experiences in the book change them in the slightest. Saccard begins as a greedy, opportunistic man and ends predictably as one. Maxime begins and ends the book as a weak-willed playboy. Renee is just a caricature of "bitches sometimes be crazy" with no effort to imbue any essence into her.

Some segments are ok, for example his description of the machinations of the corrupt Parisian elite to bleed the city dry during its facelift in the 1800s. But mostly it is chock full of boring caricature characters with nothing original to contribute and not a single line of dialog that is the least bit insightful.

A marriage of convenience for a super shady Rougon family member, who has no shame when it comes to fleecing Paris to make his fortune, turns into his wife enjoying both father and son, until she doesn’t anymore. I am loving this 20 book series thus far. I am anxious to read book 3.
