You can read this as a simple story, but you can also read deeper meanings into it. The sweet story of the author's father at the end was good background.
A lovely memoir that recalls a really positive father-son relationship. Hard work, creativity and dedication, and the drive to be in charge of one's own destiny all shape this relationship. The focus remains on this wholesome pair almost the entire time with only one sour note: a classmate who seems to look down on the son and his father for being landscapers. But their delight in creating beautiful surroundings for their clients is apparent in every page.
Sweet children’s book about going to work with the son’s father who is a landscape architect. Loved the illustrations. I wish the thread about the boy in the window who turned away had been explored a little more.
"I will use my art to tell the stories of hardworking, passionate people who make the world more beautiful."
John Parra writes of a young boy who joins his landscaper father at work. Together, they create a landscaping plan that their clients love, and Juanito gets to see his hard work come to fruition. With beautiful earthy colors reminiscent of southern California, Parra enlightens us with his version of the eureka state as one filled with hardworking, community-loving people.
The quotation above, I think, is not just Juanito speaking. I think it is John Parra speaking as well, for he has certainly made the world more beautiful with this book.
